...not much, how 'bout you?
I feel like I've been moving around in a fog lately. Not the pea soup kind, more like a light misting. Had to give up some online stuff in order to keep my offline life in order. Submitted articles for a newsletter - then double-checked my deadlines, and they are closer than I thought. :P Life has been good, though. I learned long ago that I couldn't have it all, there being only so many hours in the day to divide between being online, knitting, and tending to family. Still, it's funny how, when I'm online, I can see pictures of yarn and want to knit up a few more rows in my current project. Or when I'm offline, I take a picture and want to share it via Mobypicture.
(Twitpic appears to have some minor issues with its database which are, in the main, all fixed up. However, a friend of mine wound up with Stephen Fry's userpic [!?] as his userpic, so...yeah. Especially since my friend looks *nothing at all* like Mr. Fry.)
Have been turning a few things over in my head recently. One of them was the "Nicole" issue. At this point in time, only God knows what really went on in that van. Srsly. But as far as I understand things, Lance Corporal Smith was prosecuted under Philippine law, in a Philippine court, and convicted by same. I don't recall people screaming about any miscarriages in the actual court proceedings; so I assume those most nearly concerned felt that due process was observed. So why he was not remanded into a Philippine jail...only those most nearly concerned will ever know. I certainly don't understand it.
Let's face it. If one of our own convicted politicians can afford to cushion his way through eleven years in jail - to the point where he had his own bar - I'm sure the US Embassy could have "arranged" for Smith's relative comfort in like manner. Such things cannot be unknown, though I doubt they would be acknowledged. In this country, as with God, all things tend towards the possible; and apparently there is more than a trace of the conspiracy theorist in my blood.
On TV news, when other countries convict foreign nationals, said nationals are remanded to the jail of the host country. Refer to those Americans (?) accused of falsifying documents to adopt Egyptian babies, when adoption is apparently not legal in Egypt. All legal assistance is provided, but I'm not sure I've seen convicted foreign citizens confined to their embassy and made to do clerical work while discussions are held as to who has custodial rights, as happened to Smith - and that time is, I think, to be credited as time served.
Does it make your head ache? It certainly did mine. The best conclusion I can draw from the whole affair is that it was a situation gone bad, extremely so. I've been wanting to blog my perceptions about the whole thing for quite a while, so I'm glad that's off my mind.

In more recent events, this announcement by North Korea about whatever it is that's going to be launched, has my Dad convinced the apocalypse is on its way. Japan has announced that its citizens should keep in tune with the news and monitor the TV between April 4-8, when the launch may/may not take place. Ironically, this places it at the start of Holy Week, which ought to provide food for reflection while struggling through the last days of fasting and abstinence.
I am *this* close to wiping out the last of the debt incurred during Ramon's early hospital confinements. Just two more months, and I'm done! And strangely enough, I got a call from the credit card company, and the convo went something like this:
Credit: Hi! You've qualified for a special credit facility at only 1% interest, because of your good credit rating!
Me: Sorry, not interested - am wiping out current debt. Will pass.
Credit: Maybe you'd like to enroll your utility bills in your account?
Me: No, bills have been enrolled for the past decade or two with my bank. Not
gonna change that now.
Credit: You have other cards?
Me: Four, actually. *crosses fingers*
Credit: Maybe you'd like to transfer the balances for only .75% interest?
Me: Um, no. Two cards have no outstanding balances, will pay off the third in two months, not interested in moving balance on the fourth.
Credit: How about using our SMS inquiry service?
Me: No, the landline service serves me just fine, thank you!
Credit: (by now utterly defeated) Thank you for your time, ma'am!
My husband said that if they were really recording the convo, it would make a fine case study on how customers can refuse a bank's services. *chuckle*
The other bank wants me to have their card so desperately that they are willing to use information that is totally out-of-date to fill up the form. WTF? If this succeeds, I'm going to knock back a glass of red wine to soothe my brain cells while they process such a thing.
I read some things about the writing process that made me think that I perhaps I ought to remember that for my personal writing, I should write for myself, and not what other people are likely to think about it. Some of my best work emerged that way, after all. With that in mind, I started a drabble, and by the time the inspiration ran out, it was probably the longest thing I've written in quite a while - writing assignments don't count, that's a whole different ball game.
Anyway, I'll try and write a follow-up post tomorrow. This one is quite long enough, don't you think?
